Its been a while since anything has inspired me enough to actually write something proper for this site (rather than just regurgitate press releases ) but the slightly secretive exhibition held on Friday down The Strand was just too cool not to mention.

Photography students Veronica Sanchis, Ryan Moule, Luke Stanton, Kirstin Binding and Francesca Denega from Swansea Metropolitan University had setup a Lens Based installation in an old run down building that was once used by fishermen. Apparently the river Tawe used to flow where The Strand road now rests, and fittingly the exhibition is called ‘River of The Forgotten’. The building was decked out with fairy lights, projectors, netting, fishing line, seaweed and even had framed “fresh” fish on the walls.

To top it all off a free punk show was organised and bands including Ssssnakes and Dead Rails provided the entertainment.

Hello All,

Novembers Social is only a few days away and this is just a reminder to come along and see what is happening this month.

There will be a durational performance, fanzine publication, intervention work, animation, video, bingo and more.

Also this month is a special ’swap shop’:

The object(s) will be to swap for something else, with whoever you choose.

The music can be on any format, cd, vinyl, mp3 player, tape, etc, just bring a song and we’ll try and play it.

The idea(s) will be swapped via the medium of Royal Mail; come with one, get another in the post a few days later.

So come along ready and willing to swap and we will see you there.

Cheers,

<a href="http://www.cyrenians.co.uk/projects.shtml#celf"title="Celfi Gallery" target="_blank" >Celfi gallery have just announced their upcoming plans and the great news is that their retail outlet in the new Llys Glas development (in the old police station, Swansea) will be opening soon.

Read on after the break for the full press release.

Subject: Volunteers needed for Celfi!!!!

Hiya everyone,

Hope all is well in your world? So sorry for such a long one, here goes….

Well, fab news we are definately going to be getting those long awaited keys to our new premises in the Llys Glas development (in the old police station, Swansea) at the end of January 2009, since the fire that destroyed our old premises on Mansel Street in July 2006!!! We will be utilising February to fully furnish our new shop and gallery and we hope to have our official opening in March.

Celfi overall, is a retail training scheme for anyone over the age of 16 years who may find it hard to access full time education and/or employment. Volunteers will be recruited for a work placement with us for up to 6 months, which allows them to find their confidence and self esteem whilst gaining the necessary skills and experience to progress into a potential career in retail.

Our volunteers are offered the free opportunity to learn and gain recognised National Open College Network qualifications in Retail & Customer Service, whilst all at their own pace in a fun and relaxed working enviroment - there are currently 30 courses on offer, one course will roughly take 20 hours to fully complete. Provided with constant support and encouragement to progress their skills further, we will aid our volunteers in finding a work placement and/or college course at the end of their placement (if they so choose to do so) and provide them with a work reference and current cv.

We also recognise that some members of the general public would like to contribute both their skills and time to us through volunteering, and will not be interested in gaining the NOCNs as they are currently employed and/or in further education - I formally invite you to get in touch, you are also most welcome to join the Celfi team and help out in any way you can!!!

I will be sending out more information closer to the time, but feel free to forward this on to anyone you may feel would be interested in these exciting opportunities - placements for both accessing the training and becoming “helping hands” are stictly limited due to availability. Informal interviews will be held at our head office during December and January, times and dates to follow.

In the mean time please feel free to contact me for further information about the Celfi Gallery & Gift Shop. We greatly thank you for your interest in Cyrenians Cymru’s new and exciting project and wish you all of the very best for the future.
