Pretty Shitty City

Carbon Made is a neat online portfolio made for designers who want to show off their work on the web but have no html knowledge.

Problems with MySpace aside, it’s a great tool for bands and musicians to network with fans, promoters, and other bands. But when it comes to visual artists, it just doesn’t cut it, and whilst Flickr is good for free image hosting, it’s not quite right for a design portfolio.

If your an illustrator, graphic designer or even animator then Carbon Made is perfect. It offers a simple, easy to use layout, a clean & elegant blank canvas for your images and some pretty nice technology such as RSS feeds and Google Analytics integration if that’s what turns you on.

There are limits though, the free plan only allows 5 projects and 35 images. If you want more space and video hosting you’ll need to pay, but its still a great place to start and so much better than MySpace for this sort of thing.

Just a quick round-up of my favourite flyer design’s floating around Swansea at the moment. Select them to see a bigger image.

Exist Clothing, established in 2001, are busy refurbishing their outlet (above Hobo’s) ready for its grand (re)opening this month.

Through constant hard-work, the company has built up its reputation within Swansea’s alternative scene. Their unique blend of skate & club culture, with a philosophical conscience, has turned them into one of the city’s best assets and their cheeky signature design, Casper, has become as much an underground symbol for Swansea as the film it originated from.

The new outlet has some treats ready for us too. It’s getting a fresh lick of paint, there’ll be an exhibition from graphic artist Dilac and there’s the brand new Made2Fade tshirt series featuring four different artist’s take on the same design brief.

So put it in your diaries: 17th March @ Exist.Outlet, 214 Oxford street, Swansea, SA1 3BG.

MIMC, Swansea’s very own dirty monkey art collective, have sent out a bunch of their artwork via the MySpace bulletin board.

This looks like a good gig, but most of all I like the flyer illustration!

“Viewpoint” - a collection of paintings from students at Gorseinon College is being exhibited in the White Room at the Grand Theatre untill 27th January.

The work is of a really high standard and well worth a browse, although seeing this level of quality before they’ve even gone to Uni does leave me feeling a little inadequate.
